In a ceremony marked by demonstrations and a simulation of a cyclone, with a view to strengthening the level of response capacity of the Local Disaster Risk Management Committees (CLGRD) and improving the early warning system for climate information, ADRA, INGD and the Matutuíne district government yesterday, December 12, officially handed over two preparedness kits to the CLGRD of Ponta Mamoli and Zitundo-Sede in the Matutuíne district.
The ceremony took place at the Zitundo Administrative Post in the Matutuíne district and was presided over by the Matutuíne District Administrator, Juliana Mwito, who was given the task of officially handing over the kits. Juliana congratulated the initiative of this ecosystem-based adaptation project to climate change in Maputo's environmental protection area, which among other objectives has contributed to achieving the sustainable development goals, and also informed those present that:
"(...) it was no coincidence that their communities were chosen to strengthen readiness and access to climate information - these communities are particularly exposed to the effects of climate change because of their location" he said.
Appealing to the Local Disaster Risk Management Committees of Zitundo and Ponta Mamoli now trained by ADRA and INGD, Mwito stressed that:
"These materials (preparedness kits) that we have received today are for us to keep. But more than keeping them, they are for use in the event of extreme weather events. That's why we want to appeal to the committees and the people selected, to be more attentive to the teachings given, because in the event of a natural disaster, the populations trust you. They see in you people who have the knowledge to help others" Mwito appealed.

The representative of the INGD Provincial Delegation, Celso Mandlate, who also spoke at the ceremony, pointed out that this action precedes an activity carried out by ADRA and INGD at district level over the last seven days to revitalize the District Technical Council for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction, where various topics were addressed, and stressed that "an informed community is a community prepared to respond to climate challenges", addressed to the general public.
Speaking to our reporting team, the members of the Local Disaster Risk Management Committees of Zitundo and Ponta Mamoli said that they were ready and prepared to respond to the challenges posed by nature:
"We've learned about various topics that we didn't know about. We learned how to intervene in various ways in the event of extreme weather damage. We learned how to evacuate people and leave them in safe places, and we were taught,

, also, that injured people should be referred to the nearest health centers (...) we feel ready to help our communities" Elias observed.
During the speeches, the Country Director of ADRA Mozambique, David Masinde, also left his observation notes, and said that:
"We are happy to be part of these demonstrations and simulations of natural disasters, and we feel that the communities are
bare prepared to respond to climate challenges. We are aware that food security cannot be achieved if communities are not ready to respond to natural disasters, and as ADRA we reaffirm our commitment to continue intervening in disaster risk reduction in order to alleviate the suffering of all people who find themselves in vulnerable conditions" said David.
