"..... other communities have vegetables to eat and sell, so we saw that we should have trusted this project..." Sousa Malenga

Sousa Malenga lives in the community of Ngomene, one of the two communities that rejected the Conservation Agriculture component as an alternative livelihood at the beginning of the Kuvikela project.
He explains that when ADRA presented the project for community members to come together to start the Farmer Field School for winter crops in February 2023, community leaders instructed them to reject the initiative,
because there could be an intention to usurp land.
At harvest time, four months later, ADRA held an agricultural marketing fair in the community of Ngomene, located in the center and along the main road from the Machungulo administrative post. During the first fair, some members of this community were angry with the local leadership for forbidding them to accept the project, as they concluded that they had lost an alternative livelihood.

"AHere in Ngomene we only fish, we practically can't produce agricultural food. We're seeing that we're losing a lot because people from other communities have vegetables to eat and sell. Now we see that we should have trusted this project, so we asked the technicians to enroll us in the program..."explained Sousa Malenga.
Although the ideal period for vegetable production has passed, the members who requested the project's support in production have been receiving local technicians since August to produce the vegetables that are still suitable.
Mr. Sousa Malenga is an associate producer at the school in the peasant's field in the Ngomene community in Machangulo (Matutuine district).

is one of the 814 participants in the agricultural component of the project ''Ecosystem-based Adaptation to Climate Change in the Maputo Environmental Protection Area (MEPA): Conserving and Building Resilience - KUVIKELA project''.
